The Popular Movements Archive in Sörmland… (Föreningsarkivet i Sörmland) is a non-profit organization which works for the preservation of archives from the associations in the county of Sörmland. By doing this, we also help preserving the history of the Swedish organizational tradition.
The Popular Movements Archive in Sörmland was formed in 1966, and was initiated by local organizational archives, institutions and private interests. Since 1992 the organization has an archivist employed for activities which includes courses and advice on the care of historical documents for our members. The organization is also involved in different projects for marketing of the history of associations in order to increase the interest in research. This is achieved through activities in cooperation with other cultural institutions and organizations, but also by publishing an annual publication containing stories about the associations in the region and by organizing study tours to various archives in the country.
We also strive to complete a catalogue of all records now present in the associational archives in the county of Sörmland. This work is in process, but parts of the catalogue can already be used by contacting us.
The Popular Movements Archive in Sörmland does not in itself keep historical records. We direct records from the different associations in the county, to archival institutions and organisations which have specially designed premises for long-time storage. Our tasks are to advice and support the organisations and archive institutions in the procedure of filing and taking care of their historical records.
